Confusion is the rule of the game,  for poor me,  where batteries are concerned.

 Am told,  ''Discharge the battery completely before re-charge,  for longer life.''
Yet again am told,  ''Do NOT completely discharge battery before re-charge,  for battery will be ruined''.

Is this strange phenomenon applies only to me --  an old man among modern-day-electronic-geeks ?

Or is confusion common but kept smothered inside,  for fear of behind-the-back-ridicule ?

Now we find both maxims are correct,  only applies to different batteries.

Rest of this posting will only interest uninitiated old people who were suddenly introduced to new novel gadgets by their loved ones.

So,  modern geeks please remove yourself. 

The basic idea behind the rechargeable battery is simple: when electrical energy is applied to the battery, the electron flow from negative to positive that occurs during discharge is reversed and power is restored.

Basically there are,  commonly,  two kinds of batteries we happen to use.

One,  Nickel--Cadmium rechargeable batteries.   Two,  Lithium-ion battery.

Fully discharge the Nickel--Cadmium battery before recharge.

Lithium battery will be ruined if discharged fully.

There it is clearly stated,  for the non--geeks only please,  what is what in general on ''Rechargeable Batteries''.

Now let us,  non--geeks,  see  'what is what in this and that',   just as good old நாய் நடேசன், would have put it. 

Nickel-cadmium rechargeable batteries have the ''memory effect''.  

When battery recharged before it has discharged more than 50 percent of its power,  it forgets that it could fully discharge and recharge to the maximum.

And when it forgets its maximum potential it will naturally function just below the 50 percent of its power.

 Memory effect is caused by the formation of hard-to-dissolve cadmium crystals deep within the battery.

Cadmium crystals are an unavoidable by-product of discharge; the trick is to keep them small enough to be reformed as cadmium during the charging process.

When a battery is not fully discharged, the crystals deep within the battery are not affected by the influx of electrical current, so they are not reformed as cadmium and can grow into the troublesome larger cadmium crystals.

The battery will still function normally, but is maxed out at 50 percent.

The memory effect can be avoided by fully discharging the battery once every two to three weeks.

Allow it to discharge completely, and then fully recharge.

It's important to remember that no battery, rechargeable or otherwise, will last forever.

All batteries suffer from aging cells --  just we old fogies do. 

Lithium-ion batteries start degrading as soon as they leave the factory.

They will only last two or three years from the date of manufacture whether you use them or not.

If you completely discharge a lithium-ion battery, it is ruined.

Lithium-ion Cells have an outer case made of metal which is pressurized and has pressure-sensitive vent hole.
If the battery ever gets so hot that it risks exploding from over-pressure, this vent will release the extra pressure.
The battery will probably be useless afterward.

Lithium-ion batteries age. They only last two to three years, even if they are sitting on a shelf unused.

As we all know, Finland is a small country that thwarted the larger
Russian Bear many times in the past.

Of course, we admire a small fellow when he takes on a bigger and

Suomi-konepistooli was a submachine gun (SMG) of Finnish design that
was in service during World War II.

Suomi KP/-31 is regarded by many as one of the most successful
submachine guns of World War II.

It was so successful that many of its features were later copied and
adopted by the Soviets.

By chance, the last sentence brought to AK 47, the celebrated
assault rifle, designed by Anton Kalishnokov.

And Russians generally do not respect 'copyrights' and could have had
a hand in copying from the Suomi-konepistooli which beat their own
army.

What we are trying to imply is that, given the low profile
development of science and the low standards of products offered to
consumers of Russia, the famous AK 47 must be a clone of a better
rifle than Russia has ever produced !

There are high-profile unsloved murders in Russia.

For example,  Anna Politkovskaya,  the severely critical Journalist,  it is openly said,  across the media spectrum,  was shot dead as

a birthday gift for Leader of Russia.    

Of the 12 most infamous killings, only two have been solved.

Russian Interior Minister Rashid Nurgaliev told journalists earlier this year that Russia was "moving in the right direction" in combating contract killings.

Of course he meant that haphazard contract killings are now regularized to suit the Leader.

Yet many Russian MPs believe corruption and a labyrinthine bureaucracy are to blame for poor investigations and the frequent failure to secure justice.

Corrupt Leader begets corrupt officials and a corrupt society in the end.

Below is a list of the most high-profile murder cases in Russia.

Dimitry Kholodov,  Journalist  -  Unsolved

The first high-profile killing in the so-called new Russia was of Dmitry Kholodov, a journalist with a Moscow tabloid newspaper.

He was killed in October 1994 by a briefcase bomb.

Kholodov had been investigating corruption in the army.

Prosecutors said the assassination was organised by a group of six people led by the head of the intelligence service of air-borne forces.

In June 2003, Moscow's military court cleared the defendants, citing lack of evidence.

Russian air-borne forces wanted to have a free hand in the '''till'' !

Vladislav listyev,  TV Presenter  -  Unsolved

Vladislav Listyev,  a popular TV presenter,  was killed in Moscow in March 1995.

Just 34 days after becoming director of Russia's Public Service Television.

The killer waited for Listyev at the entrance to his block of flats and fired two shots at point-blank range.

No one has ever been arrested.

Commentators say Listyev was targeted due to his attempts to make advertising at the channel more transparent.

Well,  Vladislav Listyev,  neither wouldn't eat it himself and nor would he allow others to take a small bite  -  so he had to go !

Mikhail Manevich,  Government Official  -  Unsolved

Mikhail Manevich was a 37-year-old senior official in St Petersburg, and friend of Anatoly Chubais, who organised Russia's disastrous "loans-for-shares" privatisations in the 1990s.

Manevich was shot in the morning of 18 August, 1997, on his way to work.

Bizarrely, although the case has never officially been solved, on the anniversary of the crime in 2005, Mr Chubais announced that Manevich's killers "had been found".

Lev Rokhlin,  Retired Army Officer

Rokhlin was killed with a gun he was awarded for his military career

Lev Rokhlin was a former lieutenant-general who fought in Afghanistan and the first Chechen war from 1994-1996 - famously condemning its brutality.

He was assassinated on the night of 3 July, 1998, at his dacha near Moscow.

He was shot in the head with a gun he had received as recognition for his military achievements.

In November 2000, a court convicted Rokhlin's wife, Tamara, of her husband's murder and sentenced her to eight years in prison.

Her supporters insist the security services were behind the murder.

Killed in his own home,  by his beloved wife,  with his own meritorious gun.   The man is punished,  once more,  after death.

What a bunch of gleeful criminal minded bastards these underlings of Leader are ?

Galina Starovoitova,  Liberal Politician  -  Unsolved

Galina Starovoitova was an MP and one of the leaders of Russia's democratic movement as well as a human rights activist and international relations specialist.

She was shot dead near her St Petersburg home on 20 November, 1998.

In 2005, a court sentenced the "technical organiser" of the killing, Yury Kolchin, and the gunman, Vitaly Akinshin, to long prison terms.

But who ordered the murder - and why - remains unknown.

Andrei Kozlov, Banker  -  Solved

Andrei Kozlov's is one of the few killings to have been solved

Andrei Kozlov, the 41-year-old first deputy director of the Central Bank of Russia, was shot at close range on the evening of 13 September, 2006, while getting into his car.

On 13 November, 2008, Alexy Frenkel, a former head of VIP bank, was sentenced to 19 years in prison for organising the assassination.

Alexy Polovinkin, who pulled the trigger, was sentenced to life in prison.

Three months before the crime, the central bank had taken away Frenkel's licence.

Anna Politkovskaya,  Journalist,  killed as a birthday present to Leader  -  Unsolved

A columnist for the Russian newspaper Novaya Gazeta --- and well-known human rights activist. 

Anna Politkovskaya was shot on 7 October, 2006, at the entrance to her block of flats on Moscow's Lesnaya Street.

For many years, the main theme of her work had been Chechnya.

In August 2007, a Moscow court ordered the arrest of 10 suspects in connection with her death. But the majority of them were later freed.

A Moscow police officer and two Chechen brothers stood trial for the murder, although a third brother, who was suspected of being the gunman, disappeared.

The three were acquitted by a jury in February 2009, and have since been sent for retrial.

But Russia's Supreme Court also ordered a new effort to catch those who planned and carried out the killing.

Lawyers say the case against the three suspects in custody will now be halted and merged with the hunt for the killer and alleged mastermind.

Anastasiya Baburova,  Journalist  and  Stanislav Markelov, lawyer  -  Unsolved

Baburova was gunned down in broad daylight near the Kremlin

Moscow lawyer Stanislav Markelov, 34, and 25-year-old Novaya Gazeta journalist Anastasiya Baburova were shot and killed in broad daylight by a masked gunman on Prechistenka street, near the Kremlin.

Markelov worked on several human rights cases, some in connection with Chechnya, and had received several phone threats from extreme Russian nationalist groups.

The main areas of Baburova's journalistic interests were neo-Nazis and skinheads.

Both murders remain unsolved.

Natalya Estemirova, Chechen Human Rights Activist

Estemirova's body was found riddled with bullets in Ingushetia

A Chechen human rights activist, journalist and employee of the human rights group Memorial, Natalya Estemirova was kidnapped on 15 July, 2009.

Several hours later, her body was found riddled with bullets on a roadside in neighbouring Ingushetia.

She was 50 years old.

The crime remains unsolved.

Why Human Rights Activists in general ? 

Consider how the 2nd Chechen War was started --- Six bombs went off in Moscow apartments in the middle of the night.

Chechens were blamed and a few arrested.

But investigative Journalists wrote the bombs were placed and set off for maximum damage when people were asleep

in their apartment by Russian security forces.

Anyone who touched the subject was liquidated !

He had presided over several cases involving nationalist organisations and had received death threats.

In February, he sentenced nine members of a neo-Nazi skinhead group called the White Wolves to up to 23 years in jail.

The group was behind a series of racist murders.

He also worked on cases involving Russian officials accused of corruption and embezzlement.

There were reports that CCTV cameras recorded the shooting, by a man who appeared to be in his 20s.

The judge is reported to have died instantly after being hit in the head and chest.

Just last week Mr Chuvashov had convicted the teenage leader of the most notorious skinhead gang in Russia for the murder of three more immigrants.

The teenager was already serving a long sentence for killing 20 people.

There are reports that despite receiving death threats, Mr Chuvashov had refused to have bodyguards.

All is NOT lost with Russia,  even though it is being ruled by a ''Snake Under The Grass'' and its ''Skin Peeler''.

These two wll rule for a very long time,  but straight forward men and women will sacrifice their lives to expose these ''two'' !

Bringing a Smarter Search to Twitter, With Fees

Bill Gross, the serial entrepreneur who pioneered search advertising, is unveiling a venture on Monday that aims to make money by allowing people using Twitter to bid on key words to give their posts top ranking.

TweetUp will organize posts according to their popularity.

TweetUp, will also organize the posts according to their popularity as measured by how often readers repost them and click on links they contain.

Mr. Gross said he had signed deals with other outside Twitter services like Seesmic, TwitterFeed and Twidroid to display TweetUp’s rankings.

A TweetUp search bar will appear on Web sites like Answers.com and BusinessInsider.com.

TweetUp will split revenue evenly with each partner, he said.

The goal is to cut through the clutter of thousands of irrelevant posts on topics of interest and keep the useful ones from disappearing into a torrent of messages.

The gamble is whether Twitter users who have turned the microblogging service into global communications phenomenon will be willing to pay to get their 140-character messages noticed — and whether other Twitter users will view such paid placement as legitimate.

“We feel Twitter is unbelievably powerful, but finding the thoughtful tweets amid all the noise is unbelievably hard,” said Mr. Gross, founder of Idealab, a technology company incubator based in Pasadena, Calif. “What we’re bringing is a new sort-order to tweets.”

TweetUp has raised $3.5 million from a group of investors.

Here is how the service will work.

People can bid on key words or phrases, like “iPad” or “solar energy,” to push their Twitter profile or posts to the top of TweetUp’s rankings. Bids begin at 1 cent and people will pay each time their profile or a post shows up in a search.

Mr. Gross stressed that bids were not required to appear in search results. The service will also calculate rankings based on an algorithm that uses data from a company called Klout that measures a Twitter user’s influence. Bit.ly, a service that shortens Web addresses for display on Twitter, will provide data on how often people click on a link in a post.

So who does Mr. Gross expect to pay to put something as ephemeral as a Twitter post on top of the charts? “I think everyone who is looking to build a following will pay,” he said. That means companies that want to build their brands as well as individuals who hope to drive readers to their Web sites.

“The big bet, of course, is whether people are going to adopt it.”

2. Diet sodas are said to be good for type 2 diabetics and other blood-sugar problems.

Body tastes the sweetness, the brain triggers a release of insulin from the pancreas and also a “Sugar is coming! Stop-burning fat” response from the liver.

The result is the usual insulin-related problems of increased urge to eat, increased tendency toward fat storage etc.

Plus an arrest of healthy protein-and-starch production.

All of which compel you to plump up and eat even more unhealthy stuff later.

It's a story that last week was called a flat out lie.

Tiger's kindergarten teacher at the time, Maureen Decker,  says now,  openly,  "I am asking Tiger for a private and public apology to put my mind at ease and set the record straight."

Maureen Decker made this charge,  in 2004, and media was silent.  She declared  "It's untrue. Absolutely untrue. None of it ever happened."

But now,  ''Tiger Bashing'' is the norm of the day and  Maureen Decker finds herself in demand. On Friday, she was flanked by superstar attorney Gloria Allred in front of an arry of cameras.

Gloria Allred, as official counsel of Get Tiger, Inc., also represents Tiger's mistress Joslyn James.

As Allred scowled on the dais, the 69-year-old Maureen Decker repeated that Tiger's father Earl Woods made up the story to burnish his son's history as a young man who had suffered on his road to greatness.

Tiger Woods has a responsibility to respond to Maureen Decker.

Forget the sexting and the strippers.

Tiger should be indignant at the mere thought that he would lie about something so searing, so inhuman, and so utterly tragic.

Tiger Woods should speak out on behalf of any child forced to suffer a hate crime only to be ignored when they sought help.

We live in a country where children are driven by humiliation and violence to commit suicide before their tenth birthday.

Often their complaints are ignored until it's too late.

Here is an opportunity for Tiger to open up about his private past for a higher purpose.

It also has political implications: the Fox News Right loves nothing more than calling victims of racism liars.
