Causes - Civil War in Sri Lanka Britain granted self rule in 1948 - Govt ignored rights of minority and got votes from majority

Causes of the Civil War  in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka of today was Ceylon,  the Tea Garden,  of the British Empire for 150 years.

Ever since Britain granted independence and self rule in 1948,  The Powers-that-be ignored the rights of the 'minority'
and cadged  votes from 'majority'.

Insincere and dishonest politicians of both divides caused the turmoil.

For decency sake when one ruling party acceeds to the requests or demands of minority the opposition yelled and held rallies and forced the govt to withdraw concession granted or abrogate the ''signed agreement''.

Both ruling majority parties reached an impasse in the matter of governing the country by accomodating or respecting the rights of the minorities.  An ideal situation for revolutionary ideas.

A group of ruthless terror rebels called themselves the 'Liberators' of minority and wrecked havoc for 30 years.

They prevented the minority populace from voting at elections  -  Killed off leading politicians that started the group  -  Killed off intelectuals that voiced or wrote opposite views ('Broken Palmyrah' a book in point)  -  Killed Presidents  of Lanka and neighboring  India  -  Plundered money from unwilling populace of local and foreign developed countries under the pretext of ''buying arms to defend our mother land''  -  Proclaimed themselves as the ''sole representatives'' of the minority even though they chased away Muslims,  who spoke the same language,  from their area.

In truth the minorities were ignored by repeated govts,  but never enslaved by any stretch of imagination.

The govt caused the burning of a library of the minority,  considered to be one of the largest in South-East Asia.

And 100s of 1000s of atrocities on minoroty,  from torture, rape and murder went unrecorded.

Yet the fact remains large numbers of minority communities lived, worked, traded and even married among majority community.

A Foreign Minister,  from the minority community was responsible for explaining the nature of this ruthless group to outside world.

Thus 23 countries banned the ruthless group.
Almost every developed country banned them.

The group took their vengence.

Their sniper shot him dead,  just as he stepped out of a swimming pool.

None escaped them and their war-loving leader was cock sure he was invincible like Napolean.

There were communal riots from time to time and in 1983,  lives of 2000 minority were lost and the ruthless rebels gained 1000s of young new recruits.

The Warring Parties ignored the victims.

The intransigent leader lost the war and his life  along with his subordinates during middle of May 2009.

Adolf Hitler's story in repetition.

Support of no less than 19 countries helped the Lankan government to achieve the end of 30 year war.

Atlast the Powers-that-be realized  not to ignore minority.

Efforts are being taken to reconcile with minority  --  and country towards peace and Progress !
