Popular Tamil Newspaper Veerakesari has nodded in its advertisement in English! Why? Lethargy!!

We have heard and seen many 'malaprops'

But some emanate from such highly erudite sources
one could hadly trust one's own eyes and ears.

Veerakesari,  the leading Tamil newspaper in Sri Lanka is highly respected news source.

It could be said with pride that Sri Lanka's one time president,  J.R. Jayewardane,   invested heavily in Veerakesari.

J R,  a shrewed investor,  was sure of the vast circulation of Veerakesari.

Anton Jeyaraja Sandrasagra --  and the inimitable
advisor to  leader of Liberation Tigers,  Anton Balasingham were one time sub-editors in Veerakesari.

Anton Balasingham was then under his college name of Anton Stanislaus and wrote novels as 'Stani'.

Anton Sandrasagra, was the first editor of ''Mithiran'' --

Mithiran reached its zenith in circulation when it headlined the story of MR Radha shooting MGR,
while Thinakaran reported in a tiny box  --

The demand was so high,  special editions of  Mithiran had to be published.

That's acumen.

Anyway,  to get to the point,  the other day a chap walked into Veerakesari office in Colombo.

He was attracted by a large poster,  in the reception, proudly declaring

'' Most  Read  Tamil  Newspaper  In  Sri  Lanka  and  Abroad  ''

The young lady who attended the chap, noting the sly smile, ''என்னா ஜாதியா சிரிகிறீங்க?''

'' அதில Most Read ன்னு இருக்குது, ஆனா அது Mostly  Read  ன்னு வரோணும் ன்னு  Editor கிட்ட சொல்லுங்க''

''Poor English ! -- Shabbily treated even in Veerakesari''  --  was his passing remark.
